Everyone should have a mantra in life.
The word mantra originates from Sanskrit, meaning a “sacred message or text, charm, spell, or counsel.” In many traditions, a mantra is used to focus the mind and connect to a deeper sense of belief and peace.
As a psychologist, I like to keep things simple and always follow the KISS principle — Keep It Simple (and, if possible, even simpler — my own version of the rule!).
The Power Behind a Mantra
To me, a mantra is an affirming statement grounded in belief. It is more than an affirmation, a phrase of love or kindness we tell ourselves—it is about transforming self-doubt into quiet confidence and using the universe’s energy to guide us forward, especially when we feel uncertain or stuck.
Think of times when life feels heavy: a tough performance review, medical treatment, or a relationship conflict. In those moments, saying something as simple as “I will be okay” or “I’ll find a way through this” can help.
You may not yet know what the next step is, but the MANTRA anchors you in faith — faith in yourself, in the process, and in the power of change. It turns a trial into an opportunity for growth, a journey to walk through rather than an outcome to endure passively.
Why Mantras Matter
Mantras are powerful. They centre us, calm us, and give us hope.
They empower us to take responsibility for our own well-being — reminding us that, ultimately, the primary duty of care for ourselves rests with ourselves.
I am reminded of a scene from the famous Indian movie Three Idiots, where an orphaned child finds comfort in the mantra “All is well.” It helps him calm his fears during the darkest hours of his life. He carries it into adulthood, and even his friends adopt it in their own moments of struggle.
Belief is contagious — and when repeated with intention, it works.
Familiar Words of Wisdom
Another well-known mantra comes from Winnie the Pooh, when Christopher Robin says to Pooh:
“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”
Repeating this simple truth can be surprisingly powerful when life feels uncertain. It offers reassurance, courage, and a sense of inner steadiness.
My Personal Mantras
Here are some of the mantras I find grounding and helpful:
To acknowledge and validate feelings: I say to myself, “This too shall pass.”
To stay strong and resilient: I say to myself, “I have overcome challenges before, and I can overcome this.”
To practice acceptance: I say to myself, “I am doing my best.”, “I accept the things I cannot change.”
To ease worries about the future: I say to myself, “Que sera sera — whatever will be, will be.”
To nurture hope: I say to myself, “The best is yet to come.” “Every day is a second chance.”
Each one carries a quiet strength — a reminder that we can find calm and courage even in uncertain times. A mantra can be a simple word, phrase, or sentence — but its meaning grows with repetition and belief. It’s not magic; it’s mindfulness in motion.
So take a moment today and ask yourself What’s your mantra?
What words would help you breathe, refocus, and move forward when life feels uncertain?
Write it. Say it. Live it and let it guide you home to yourself.
