Reflections
As the calendar year draws to a close, we are almost instinctively drawn into reflection. Time itself seems to slow, inviting us to pause and take stock of where we have been. We revisit the milestones we reached, the moments that brought us joy, and the challenges that tested our resilience. We acknowledge not only what we achieved, but also what we learned—about our strengths, our limits, and our capacity to grow. This process is rarely about perfection; rather, it is about awareness.
End-of-year reflection is powerful because it shifts our attention from movement to meaning. Throughout the year, we are often consumed by doing—meeting deadlines, fulfilling obligations, and responding to constant demands. Reflection allows us to step back and ask more meaningful questions:
What truly mattered? What drained us? What energised us?
In answering these, we gain clarity, and clarity gives us choice.
There is something uniquely motivating about this end-of-year moment. Knowing that others around us are engaging in similar introspection creates a shared sense of renewal. Conversations become more intentional, ambitions more visible, and forgiveness—both of ourselves and others—feels more accessible. The year’s end gives us permission to let go of what no longer serves us and to redefine the narrative we carry forward.
Yet the most significant insight may be this: reflection does not belong exclusively to December. The end of the year reminds us of a truth that holds every day—change is always available. Each morning offers us a quiet reset, an opportunity to realign with our values and act with greater purpose. When we wait for symbolic milestones, we delay the life we can live right now.
WE can choose to reflect every day. We can change the narrative by recognising that we are the authors of our own story and positioning ourselves as the hero of our script. By adopting a simple mantra—“today is the first day of the rest of our lives”-and continuing to build our personal toolbox, we can gather and refine the tools that give us the leverage we need. By surrounding ourselves with artisans—people who sharpen our thinking, challenge our comfort zones, and encourage our growth—we can better navigate our path. We can turn our self-doubt into motivation, embracing the imposter syndrome to guide us forward. We can seize the moments each day offers and live a fuller, joyful life. At the end of each day, just as at the end of each year, reflection becomes the bridge between who we were and who we are becoming. It allows us to honour our progress, extract wisdom from our experiences, and step forward with renewed focus and courage.
Here are two simple, powerful reflection questions—one to close the day and one to begin the next — to build awareness, intention, and momentum without being overwhelmed.
End of the Day Reflection Question
“What did I do today that moved me closer to the person I want to become?”
Beginning of the Day Intention Question
“What is the one intentional action I can take today that will make today meaningful?”
“We do not learn from experience… we learn from reflecting on experience.” – John Dewey
